I Yah!, H.O.T.'s title song for 4th album. With I Yah!, H.O.T. was acknowledged for their maturity in music and in person. The song was written in dedication to the 23 kindergardeners who died in a schoolfire. The news of the kindergardeners hit Korea hard, and it rose up serious discussions about the society in general in their treatment of their children. This was largely in part because of the fact that the children were LOCKED IN the room that caught on fire, while the supervisors were out (apparently, not supervising). The tragic death of young kindergardeners influenced H.O.T.'s 'Iyah' which not only talks about the kindergardeners' unfair deaths but also about the treatment of children in the Korean society in general. I Yah! was surely one of H.O.T.'s greatest hit and will always be remembered in KPOP History. The music video was shot in New York City when they attended MTV's VMA (Video Music Award) to accept their 'Korean Viewers Choice Award' on September 9, 1999 (9.9.99). Written/Composed/Arranged by respectable singer and songwritter: Yoo Young Jin Choreographed by H.O.T. members: Moon HeeJun and Jang WooHyuk. Released: 1999

@@sangyeondilf2317 basically this song is based on a fire that happened at a school in 1999 and kindergarten students were locked in the rooms by negligent teachers and as you can probably imagine, many died. it reflects the disillusion of youth in korea and the song was very controversial. many of their songs called out korean society and many people did not like it but they are legends.

Fyi… this song is actually about dissing the South Korean government (in 1999) with their actions towards the “Sealand Youth Training Center Fire Accident” which occurred on June 30th, 1999 at 12:30 am while at the same time.. it is a song about mourning of the victims of this accident. Lyrics like “피우지도 못한 아이들의 불꽃을 꺼버리게 누가 허락했는가 언제까지 돌이킬 수 없는 잘못을 반복하고 살 텐가 (Who gave the permission to put out the flames of passion of children that were unable to be bloomed? Until when will we live our lives by repeating irrevocable mistakes?)” Note that this accident occurred 4 years after the Sampoong Mall collapse incident and 15 years later… on April 16th, 2014, Sewol Ferry sinking incident also occurred. So many irrevocable mistakes have been made throughout the years and yet the government took very little to no action regarding the incidents.

이게 당시에 어느정도로 파격적인거였냐면 1. 상황 사회적 문제(아이들의 사망)를 정면으로 들이받는 메세지를 2. 당대 최고의 아이돌가수가 들고나왔는데 3. 염색, 패션, 노래가사 모든게 규정이 심한데도 그거 걍 다 싹 무시하고 저 컨셉으로 나온거임 4. 심지어 저 컨셉도 저승사자, 죽은사람, 소방대원 등등 그런걸 형상화 했다는 루머까지 공공연하게 돌 정도였고 5. 이런 노래와 컨셉이 청소년에게 악영향을 미친다는둥 여튼 문제있다는 식으로 매체들이 다루기까지 했음 (6. 당시 SM과 KBS가 사이가 좋지 못해서 KBS에는 단 한번도 방송에 나오질 못했고, 만약 나왔더래도 염색을 다 가리는 수준으로 해야헸었으니 어차피 제대로 나올수도 없었을것임) 사회비판적 메세지의 하드코어한 노래이기도 하지만 그 안에는 엄청난 시도와 도전이 있던 샘.. 지금 kpop의 그 어떤 아이돌이 이런 선택을 할 수 있겠음 ㅋ 아마 H.O.T. 이후로 이정도로 파격적으로 나온 아이돌은 없지 않았나 싶음.. 진짜 이 노래는 재평가가 시급함

@Johan Setiadi OP means they are the First Kpop group!! they started the crazyness for Kpop groups and idols in S.Korea. Obviously Kpop and the crazyness was exported too. Boa was big in Japan (Asia mainly, but specially big in Japan ～then TVXQ! also huge in Japan). Then Super Junior were huge in China and hallyu comes from the chinese word 韩流 (Han liu)...

확실한 팩트인지 모르겠지만 이 노래로 활동했을때 H.O.T의 의상과 메이크업 컨셉이 팬들 사이에서 화제가 되었죠. 강타는 저승사자, 토니안은 씨랜드 구조대원, 이재원은 희생된 아이들, 장우혁은 아이들의 부모님, 문희준은 씨랜드 악덕업주 컨셉이였죠

Considered the first K-pop idol group, H.O.T.’s 1999 hit “I Yah!” was one of the boy band’s most successful hits. A song fueled by rage, it’s dominated by smooth orchestral instrumentals that clash with a dramatic infusion of metal and hard rock elements, via its wailing guitar riffs and screaming vocals. Released along with a music video that drew on Japan’s visual kei scene for inspiration, the group took the opportunity to call out corruption in society and created an anthem describing the frustrations of the current generation of youth.
